Why DEI Matters in CSD

Valuing Diversity: In alignment with the ASHA Code of Ethics, guidance, and CAA accreditation standards, we emphasize the importance of diversity within the framework of ethical and accreditation obligations. Recognizing and valuing diversity is not just a programmatic choice but a commitment to professional excellence. Further discussions, including the significance of diversity in supporting population health through representation from the full population, will be explored in future iterations.

Definitions
Diverse and Inclusive Course Content: Incorporating diverse perspectives, histories, and experiences into course materials, reading lists, and class discussions. This can help to challenge dominant narratives and promote a more inclusive understanding of the subject matter.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Designing course materials and assessments that are accessible to all students, including those with disabilities. This can involve using a variety of instructional materials, such as audio, visual, and written materials, and making sure that all materials are easily accessible online.

Active Learning and Collaborative Activities: Encouraging students to engage in group work, discussions, and other collaborative activities that promote inclusiveness and help to build a sense of community in the classroom.

Flexible Assessment: Offering multiple ways to demonstrate mastery of course material, including written exams, oral presentations, group projects, and portfolios. This can accommodate different learning styles and help to level the playing field for students with diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Inclusive Classroom Climate: Creating a positive, inclusive classroom climate by promoting respect, open-mindedness, and active listening. This can involve setting clear expectations for behavior and using inclusive language, avoiding stereotypes and microaggressions.

Intersectionality: Acknowledging and considering the multiple and interrelated aspects of students' identities, experiences, and backgrounds and how these may impact their learning and experiences in the classroom.
